Island Arrests

The Indian Navy and the Coast Guard thwarted yet another piracy attempt over the weekend.

The combined efforts saw the apprehension of 16 pirates operating west of the Lakshadweep Islands, while they were also able to free 16 hostages.

The alert was raised after an attempted attack on the “MV Maersk Kensington”. When investigating, the “INS Suvarna” came under fire from a pirate vessel which was identified as “Morteza”, (an Iranian trawler).

Onboard were 16 Somali pirates and 16 hostages – the pirates were arrested and the hostages freed.
