Israel to Help Kenya

Following the Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria’s statement that his Government is prepared to assist Nigeria in combating terrorism (see MEND Threatens Ports), Tel Aviv has made a similar pledge to Kenya.

The government of Israel is prepared to help Kenya police its borders with Somalia, foster closer collaboration in the fight against fight terrorism, and cooperate in the battle against maritime piracy.

The Israeli Minister for Public Security, Yitzhak Aharonovich, has stated that Kenya remains a critical ally of the state of Israel and the African nation’s stability was crucial.

Kenya’s Prime Minister, Raila Odinga, had asked for support in monitoring the porous border between Kenya and Somalia which is considered a security threat to the country.

The Prime Minister has stated that instability in Somalia has lately become a huge problem for Kenya. Odinga also stated that piracy has made transportation of cargo along the East African Coast a risky and expensive venture and he has requested cooperation in the fight against piracy.

Mr Aharonovich, who recently visited Africa for the fist time, met with Kenya’s met President Mwai Kibaki, the Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka and the Prime Minister Mr Odinga. During these meetings Mr Aharonovich discussed terrorism and piracy and pledged his Government’s support.
