Privateer Fear

The Marshall Islands has spoken out on the issue of flagging “private navies”.

They have refused to register a proposed fleet of privately-armed anti-piracy vessels.

Feeling that until the IMO produces clear guidance on the suppression of piracy, then flag States have to steer clear of potentially adding to the security burden.

Their position is that the use of armed guards on board ships is better than a private navy, and they have backed these convictions by providing support for the Security Association for the Maritime Industry (SAMI).

SAMI will act as a regulatory body for private security, offering vetting and certification for security companies and personnel.
