Tanker Taken

Somali pirates hijacked a chemical tanker with 25 crew members aboard off the Kenyan coast over the weekend, according to officials.

News reports state the captured Singapore-registered ship “MT Gemini”, owned by Glory Ship Management, was hijacked Saturday and was heading toward Somalia.

The vessel, carrying crude palm oil from Indonesia to Kenya, was captained by a South Korean. The crew included three other South Koreans, 13 from Indonesia, five from China and three from Myanmar, the ship’s owners said.

“Our highest concerns are for the safety and well-being of the crew members,” Glory Ship Management said in a statement. “We will make every effort to secure their release. The company is keeping the appropriate Singapore and international authorities fully informed of the situation.”
