Shared Values

The G8 nations have issued a statement on “Shared values, shared responsibilities” with regard to Africa.

They have expressed continued concern regarding the serious threat of piracy, in particular emanating from Somalia. They have underlined their determination to continue to respond resolutely to this threat, through a coordinated response at sea and by tackling longer-term regional capability development needs.

An additional political view on piracy will be taken when Asian and European foreign ministers meet in Budapest on June 6-7 for talks on new security challenges, including piracy at sea.

Hungary is the current presidency of the 27-nation European Union and the high profile meeting should give further indications on the political will to tackle piracy in the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean.
