According to local sources a maritime security alert has been issued after Somali pirates hijacked an animal carrier off the coast of Puntland.
The vessel was sailing from Bossasso towards the United Arab Emirates with a cargo of goats. The vessel was attacked shortly after departing from port.
A Puntland minister has reportedly stated that his forces intend to retake the vessel; but in any case given the perishable and high-maintenance nature of the cargo it will likely be released after a shorter detention period than most other ships taken by Somali pirates. It is understood the vessel is owned by, “Somali businessmen”.
