Insurance premiums due to piracy have doubled the costs of transporting goods past the Horn of Africa, maritime experts have reported.

The cost increase could fuel another price hike on traded goods as vessel owners are likely to pass on the burden to consumers.

Chairman of the South African Shippers Council Fanie Pretorius has said the high insurance premiums were a strain on the finances of vessel owners.
