Armed Calls

InterManager, the ship managers trade association has backed calls for flag States and charterers to allow operators greater freedom to employ armed guards on vessels transiting piracy-prone waters.

InterManager president Alastair Evitt  has said the move is motivated by a desire to act in the best interest of seafarers and they believe that vessels should be able to use armed guards, “unhindered by restrictive flag state legislation or charterparty agreements”.

The Association stresses that any decision taken to use armed guards should be based on a risk assessment of each vessel and should be in accordance with the guidance set out in the Best Management Practices 4 (BM4) industry standard anti-piracy guidelines.
