The Russian army has done the unthinkable and stopped ordering new Kalashnikov rifles, fearing its most famous weapon is no longer up to date.

The guns are a favourite of Somali pirates, and there are fears that old stock could now rush onto the market, fuelling further violence in the likes of Somalia and Yemen.
