The latest contingent of South Korean troops began anti-piracy operations in waters off Somalia, the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JSC) said Tuesday. The 300-strong contingent aboard the 4,400-ton destroyer “Munmu” the Great is the eighth replacement of the Cheonghae unit since its deployment in early 2009 under a global effort to tackle piracy there.

The Royal Naval frigate “HMS Somerset” is in the Middle East conducting security and anti-piracy measures. She has recently taken over duties from sister ship “HMS Monmouth”. The ship’s crew is firmly focussed on defending worldwide trade routes and ensuring security and safety in international waters. “HMS Somerset” will play her part in policing counter-terrorism, piracy operations, drug and people smuggling.

On September 12, EUNAVFOR welcomed the German frigate “FGS KÖLN” to Operation ATALANTA. Commanded by Commander Christopher Karow, the ship and her 219 crew members will operate in the area of operations off the Horn of Africa for the next three months; the ship previously deployed to the mission during the autumn of 2010.
