Regulation Demands

Members of the European parliament have called for fresh regulations on armed guards protecting vessels from piracy, as countries struggle to combat the attacks, kidnappings and ransom demands that cost global shipping an estimated $12bn a year.

Shipping lines have increasingly turned to armed security as piracy attacks off the coast of Somalia turn more violent and extend as far as India, Sri Lanka and Mozambique.
