Ports workers return to wharf
Unionised Ports of Auckland workers will start heading back to the wharves tomorrow after six weeks of operation by a non-union crew.
The absence from work follows employment disputes between the Maritime Union of New Zealand (MUNZ) and Ports of Auckland bosses over wage bargaining and security of employment.
A group of engineers will be the first to return to the job at 8.30am tomorrow.
MUNZ president Garry Parsloe said he is pleased the workers are returning for their sake and the rest of Auckland.
“They (workers) want to continue to be part of a successful port business that benefits us all.
“Our members want to be on the job contributing their skills and energy, not standing outside the gates while the port stands idle at a huge cost to every one of us.”
