Big boats arrive in London

Thousands of spectators are expected to arrive at Heathrow airport on Thursday, the eve of the Olympics opening ceremony, and most will head to conventional hotels. But for an exclusive few there is an alternative.

Large luxury yachts are moored in South Quay on the Isle of Dogs, ideally located for a short journey to the Olympic Park.

The yachts are being hired out to those with sufficient funds and form an ideal base from which to enjoy the Games.

The Ilona is one of those already in the docks and is owned by Frank Lowy, co-founder of the Westfield shopping-centre group.

Octopus, a luxury yacht owned by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, is well equipped, with two helipads, a recording studio and even a submarine.

It is expected to play host to a number of parties and events during the Games.

Many more yachts are expected to arrive in the coming days as the capital gears up for the greatest show on earth.
