Perilous Crossing

Despite the perils and the ever greater difficulty in circumventing border security measures, migrants crossing the Mediterranean from North Africa continue to reach the shores of southern Europe.

52 African migrants intercepted in waters south of Spain

Spain’s Maritime Rescue service on Sunday intercepted a boat carrying 52 sub-Saharan migrants in ocean waters south of Spain, some four miles from the island of Alboran.

Among the people on board the open boat were 12 women and five young children.

The boat – which is six meters (19.5 feet) long and equipped with an outboard motor – is being transferred to the port of Motril, in the province of Granada, emergency authorities told Efe.

The vessel was spotted initially by the military detachment on Alboran Island, which informed the ocean rescue service, a boat from which then intercepted it early Sunday afternoon.

In Motril, the migrants will be attended to by the Red Cross before they are placed at the disposition of the police.
