Noel Choong of the International Maritime Bureau (IMB) has stated that a Greek-owned oil tanker was attacked and seized this morning about 17 nautical miles off the coast of Togo’s capital Lome.

Choon specified that the pirates exchanged gunfire with a naval boat before escaping. It is believed that all 24 crew members of the oil tanker have been kidnapped.

IMB sources believe that the sailors will only be held until the pirates have stolen all of the ship’s cargo – an ever more common occurrence in the region.

Piracy is on the rise in West Africa, the dramatic increase in maritime crime over the past few years has been accompanied by an ever greater willingness to use violence in attacks on merchant vessels.
