The security situation in the country is not as bad as being portrayed outside the country. The Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Oluseyi Petinrin, who made the assertion in Lagos on Monday while answering questions from newsmen, said that the security situation was being portrayed as if the whole country was in crisis.

According to him, “Out of the 36 states in the country, it is only in Borno, Yobe, Adamawa and part of Bauchi that security is threatened but the other 32 states are calm. Is this enough to say the whole country is being threatened?” he queried.

The CDS, who was in Lagos to commission the joint maritime security training centre in Ojo, noted that the security situation was being addressed by the armed forces and the government, adding that the situation was a passing phase.

He said all the security agencies were collaborating effectively to ensure that the situation was contained once and for all.

He, therefore, urged Nigerians to collaborate with the security agencies by giving vital information that can assist them.

“The school was built by the British government and we were supposed to provide accommodation. But this was not there so, we couldn’t bring people from their barracks all over Nigeria to come to Lagos to do the course. But now, with the commissioning of accommodation, we will be able to bring people in, train them in many aspects including anti-piracy duties so that our waters would be safer.”

He further said that when people say there is a problem, it should be considered as relative, “because I know there are certain states in the country that have been having problems and we can mention them, as Borno, Yobe, to some extent Adamawa, Bauchi and some incursions in Kano

“We have 36 states, so if we go by statistics, you will realise that this not as if there is problem all over Nigeria. There are problems in some states, I agree but we should not now overemphasise that to the detriment of the good job our security operatives are doing. The fact that we have security in 30 out of the 36 states means that you should commend somebody but even in this states where we have problems, we are working to tackle them.”
