NIMASA strengthens bond with navy to fight piracy, oil theft

Worried by the increasing rate of piracy in the Gulf of Guinea, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) is strengthening its existing memorandum of understanding (MoU) on waterways security with the Nigerian Navy.

According to the agency, the MoU is targeted at curbing the menace of pirate attacks on vessels and their crew on the nation’s territorial waters.

Ziakede Patrick Akpobolokemi, director general of NIMASA, in a joint news conference at the NIMASA office in Lagos recently, said that the agency is strengthening the existing MoU with Navy to enable both agencies achieve their statutory mandate of protecting the Nigerian territorial waters.

“We intend to raise the capacity of the Maritime Guard Command (MGC) by providing it with more personnel and the needed equipment such as military hardware that would boost the ability to respond to attacks,” he said.
