Amphibious aircraft beefs up security

The threat of pirate attacks and armed robbery along the Malacca Straits has seen a dramatic decline following the beefing up of security with the use of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency’s amphibious aircraft.

Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Ahmad Maslan said the authorities recorded 38 attacks in 2004 but there was a steady drop after the use of the aircraft with 10 cases in 2005, eight in 2006, four in 2007 and only two in 2008.

“There were no cases of piracy or armed robbery in the area between 2009 and 2011,” he said in a reply to a supplementary question by Datuk Dr Marcus Mojigoh (BN-Putatan) during Question Time.
