National Marine Police Training Academy

The U.S. is investing over $1.2 million in the development of a new training academy for the National Marine Police in Ghana. The project is the result of 2 years of coordination between the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), the U.S. Force Protection Detachment in Ghana and the Ghana Police Service.

U.S Funds the Construction of National Marine Police Training Academy

Deputy Chief of Mission of the United States Embassy in Ghana, Pat Alsup, and Ghana’s Minister of the Interior Kwesi Ahwoi, have broken ground to commence the construction of the National Marine Police Training Academy at Anyinase in the Western Region.

Other dignitaries who also participated in the ceremony last Friday included the Acting Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Ahmed Alhassan, and Minister of Energy Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah.

A press release signed by Joyce O. Asiedu, Press Attache at the U.S. Embassy in Accra and copied to the Ghana News Agency said the U.S. was investing over $1.2 million in the new training academy which was the result of 2 years of coordination between the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), the U.S. Force Protection Detachment in Ghana and the Ghana Police Service.

The training to be provided in the academy will help law enforcement officials improve their skills in various aspects of protecting Ghana’s coastline and encourage regional communication regarding international threats to maritime security.

“The unit will carry out and enforce Ghana’s maritime and environmental laws targeting illicit activities at sea, such as piracy, illegal arms, narcotics and human trafficking.

“A secured maritime domain benefits everyone. It makes for a safe environment for various authorized activities – from small scale fishing to large scale commercial oil drilling”, the release stated.

It also indicated that the AFRICOM Counternarcotics and Law Enforcement Division had been instrumental in a variety of similar projects throughout Ghana and Africa. GNA
