Combined Task Force (CTF) 150 and CTF 151 leaders met senior maritime commanders in Oman during a visit to enhance regional security measures.

The joint CTF 150/151 delegation, led by Commodore Daryl Bates, Royal Australian Navy, Commander CTF 150, met the acting Commander of the Royal Navy of Oman, Commodore Rasheed Taj Moyd Al Raisi and the Officer Commanding Coast Guard Headquarters, Royal Oman Police, Brigadier Bader Khalfan Al Zadgali in Muscat.

Oman and CMF share a mutual interest in promoting security at sea for mariners with legitimate business and in denying access to those who seek to engage in acts of piracy, armed robbery or illegally transport of narcotics, weapons or personnel.

Flanked by the Arabian Sea to the east, Gulf of Oman and Straits of Hormuz to the north, Commodore Bates observed that Oman is geographically positioned in a dynamic part of the world, he said: “Oman is justifiably proud of its rich maritime history, and with that comes a desire to ensure that the surrounding sea lanes remain safe, and free from illegal activity.”

He added: “This visit to Muscat provided a great opportunity to exchange information on maritime security operations. It has enhanced our understanding of regional dynamics, and allowed us to share ideas on combating criminal activity in the future. The involvement of regional states is key to the work of the CMF, and the preservation of a lawful and stable maritime environment.”

CTF 150’s command element is currently staffed by a team of 25 personnel from the Royal Australian Navy. Its principal mission is to maintain maritime security and deter, disrupt and defeat attempts by international terrorist organisations to use the maritime environment as a venue for an attack or as a means to transport personnel, weapons or other materials.

CTF 151 is commanded by Commodore Aage Buur Jensen, Royal Danish Navy, with a headquarters staff including personnel from Denmark, New Zealand, South Korea, Japan and Saudi Arabia. Its principal mission is to disrupt piracy and armed robbery at sea and to engage with regional and other partners to build capacity and improve relevant capabilities in order to protect global maritime commerce and secure freedom of navigation.
