European Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso Wednesday issued a warning to India over the case of two Italian marines who could face the death penalty for the killing of two fishermen in 2012.

European Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso Wednesday issued a warning to India over the case of two Italian marines who could face the death penalty for the killing of two fishermen in 2012.

“The European Union opposes the death penalty in any situation,” Barroso stated after meeting Italian prime minister Enrico Letta in Brussels.

The EU was “very closely following” the case of Italian riflemen Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone, Barroso said.

“It encourages India to find a satisfactory solution to the case,” he stated, adding that the fate of the two marines would “have an impact on the whole EU”.
