Chinese fleet arrives for RIMPAC

Chinese media reports that a Chinese PLA Navy fleet comprising of about 1100 soldiers and officers has arrived at Pearl Harbour this week in preparation for the Rim of the Pacific Multinational Naval Exercise (RIMPAC). The Chinese fleet includes the missile destroyer, Haikou, frigate Yueyang, a supply ship, hospital ship and two helos along with commandos and specialist diving team.

RIMPAC runs between June 26th and August 1st, and this is the first time Chinese forces have been invited to take part. The multi-national drill is the largest exercise of its kind and will also see the Norwegian Navy take part for the first time. Twenty three countries are expected to participate, including Australia, the UK, Thailand, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Mexico and France.

A variety of drills will be undertaken by the forces involved, including anti-piracy, disaster relief and joint warship assaults.
