Tanker missing in South China Sea

Following a series of hijackings in South East Asia, the Singapore Information Fusion Centre (IFC) has issued another alert.

The Singapore IFC has issued an alert to all ships in the region, requesting they keep a lookout for the MT Arsenal, which has gone missing. Owners lost contact with the vessel around 12nm off Malaysia at 0745 LT today, June 17th. The ship was being accompanied by a tug, named as the Pawai.

The MT Arsenal was carrying a cargo of MOGAS, making it a significant target for the pirates currently operating in the area. On Saturday, as we reported yesterday, the MT Ai Maru was hijacked by pirates and lost 620 metric tonnes of its cargo before regional naval forces were able to reach her.

Despite the best efforts of navies in the region, it appears that organised criminal gangs are receiving intelligence on tanker transit routes and cargoes and have ramped up attacks in recent weeks. It is estimated that since April, there have been seven hijackings in Asia.
