Piracy still present but less severe, says SSA

The traditional threats of piracy still loom in region, but at the lower severity as compared to East coast of Africa and waters off West Africa, said the Singapore Shipping Association (SSA).

Patrick Phoon, president of the SSA, said this yesterday during the 18th annual general meeting that focused on the international development of the industry and its impact on Singapore.

“The SSA adopts a zero tolerance policy towards pirate attacks against innocent trading ships. The ongoing threat of piracy and armed robbery does not only affect the safety of our seafarers, our ships and cargoes but also increase the risk of pollution to our marine environment,” said Phoon.
