Rescue teams are looking for four sailors who have gone missing after an Indian military ship sank, the latest accident to hit the navy.

One sailor died and 23 others were rescued after the vessel flooded during a naval exercise off the coastal city of Visakhapatnam late on Thursday.

The cause of the incident is being investigated.

There have been a series of operational accidents involving naval vessels since August last year.

In August 2013, 18 sailors died in one of the navy’s worst disasters when a submarine sank after a fire at a dockyard in Mumbai.

In February this year, two sailors died after an accident on board a submarine, the INS Sindhuratna, while it was out at sea.

Navy chief Admiral DK Joshi resigned after the incident, accepting “moral responsibility” for that and other operational accidents involving navy ships under his watch.

In March, a navy officer was killed after a toxic gas leak on board a ship being built at the dockyard in Mumbai.

In the latest incident, the 31-year-old vessel “experienced flooding in one of its compartments” during a routine mission to recover practice torpedoes fired by navy ships during a naval exercise, an Indian navy statement said.

The navy said that search and rescue ships dispatched to the area to look for the missing sailors.
