LAGOS-Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA has finally ‎reacted to the news going round about the acquisition of Norwegian battleships by one Global West Vessel Specialist Nigeria Limited, GWVSNL owned by former Niger Delta agitator, Chief Government Ekpemupolo, also known as Tompolo.
GWVSNL is a private company on contract with NIMASA to provide platforms, security boats, equipment and expertise‎ to help in securing the nation’s waterways and thereby raise revenue. Under the contract, the staff of the company were not permitted to bear arms.
‎Director General of NIMASA, Mr. Ziakede Patrick Akpobolokemi said in an end of year press briefing in Lagos that the alleged warships are patrol boats that were purchased without weapon installations.
According to him “these are boats bought, commissioned and handed over to the Nigerian Navy. It is the Navy that has mounted their guns on these boats.
“No weapon came with those boats, the boats were just bought ordinarily, it is the navy that is in charge of those boats.
“So what will you ever do in this country to have your peace? I don’t understand! If you want we can take you to see these boats.
“The ground breaking ceremony Mr. President performed for a maritime University in May, 2014, three of those boats were also commissioned ‎with the Navy guns mounted on them, with the Navy in charge of those boats…”
