Plot to target Iraqi port indicates growing strength of armed groups around Basra

EVENT

Iraqi security forces seized four Katyusha-type rockets on 12 January, which had been set up approximately 500 metres from Umm Qasr port in Basra province and aimed at the facility.

Two improvised explosive devices (IEDs) placed on Pier 11, where the marine excavator Teeba was alongside, were successfully dismantled. The most recent previous attack on the port occurred in August 2013 and was probably criminally, rather than politically, motivated.
