ASEAN Countries Should Look Into Information Sharing To Prevent Maritime Terrorism

KUALA LUMPUR: ASEAN countries should seriously look into having more information sharing as an effort to prevent piracy, sea robbery and maritime terrorism in the surrounding region.

Royal Thai Police Special Branch Officer, Lt Col Chuvit Chuvej stressed that information sharing on piracy, sea robbery and maritime terrorism can enhance cooperation towards curbing what has become a regional problem.

“For example, when pirates (attack) a ship, we must have coordination in monitoring the sea and to give a call or alert us (ASEAN countries).

“In this way we can easily know the information that has been given. I suggest to use this method to our community to curb sea crimes in another area,” he told Bernama when met during an ASEAN Seminar on Piracy, Sea Robbery and Maritime Terrorism here today.
