Gulf of Aden convoys consider new speed

MSR has been asked by MSCHOA to request feedback on a possible new speed introduction for convoys transiting the Internationally Recognised Transit Corridor (IRTC):

MSCHOA is the Coordinator for Independent Naval Convoys in the Gulf of Aden.  We are working together with our partners from Counter Piracy Naval Operations of China, India, Japan, South Korea and Russia to improve the efficiency of convoys to better serve the Operations of Merchant Vessels. All Convoys are currently undertaken at 12 knots. We are considering introducing a 14 knot speed for some of the Naval Convoys both east and west bound, whilst still retaining the 12 knot speed for others. Can you please advise if the inclusion of a  “higher speed” convoy of 14 knots would be welcomed by your Shipping Company or not ? Please reply to CJ3webadministrator@mschoa.org by latest  15th May 2015. Thank you.

While piracy off East Africa has been largely suppressed by the naval coalition, the risk still remains and the convoy escort programme remains a bedrock of security in the region. We urge all interested parties to register their thoughts with MSCHOA.
