Italian fishing boat seized near Libya, apparently by pirates

A Sicilian fishing boat with seven people on board was seized overnight in an apparent act of piracy 40 miles from the coast of Libya, a trade association said.

Libyan government launches have stopped such boats in the past, sometimes as they investigated disputes over fishing territories. But there have been no reports of pirate attacks.

The stretch of sea has grown increasingly chaotic in recent years as hundreds of thousands of people have risked the dangerous journey to Europe to escape conflicts in Libya, other parts of north Africa and the Middle East.
