Italian navy takes control of fishing boat seized by armed men

Vessel with seven crew members had been seized off coast of Libya and was reportedly heading towards port of Misrata

The Italian navy says it has boarded and taken control of a Sicilian fishing boat that had been seized by armed men off the coast of Libya.

The navy said in a statement that military personnel operating in the area on migrant rescue duty responded to reports that the fishing vessel had been taken. The statement did not give further details on the condition of the seven crew members or if the Italian military encountered the armed men.

A Sicilian fishing cooperative had earlier reported that the boat had been seized about 40 miles off the Libyan coast and was heading towards the port of Misrata.
