Asean committed to maritime security

KUALA LUMPUR: Asean maritime enforcement agencies are committed to securing their waters despite the territorial dispute in the South China Sea.

Maritime Institute of Malaysia chairman Vice-Admiral Tan Sri Ahmad Ramli Nor said although the South China Sea dispute was a problem in the region, the security of the waters surrounding the region must be maintained.

Speaking to reporters after attending the second Asean-European Union (EU) High-Level Dialogue here yesterday, he said the dialogue was aimed at enhancing inter-agency cooperation in maritime security.

“This includes combatting piracy and armed robbery at sea as well as investigation of maritime incidences.

“Members (of Asean) know that securing the waters here is not one man’s job and constant information sharing and cooperation are necessary,” he said.
