Coast Guard plane goes missing off Karaikal

A Coast Guard Dornier aircraft, which left Chennai on a routine patrol to Palk Bay near Rameswaram on Monday evening, has gone missing off the coast of Karaikal.

Coast Guard authorities on Tuesday said the aircraft with three senior Coast Guard commandants on board lost contact with the authorities at 9.25pm on Monday. This is the second accident involving a Dornier aircraft in the country in recent months after one involving a Navy plane near Goa in March.

Five Coast Guard ships and four Navy ships along with long range maritime surveillance aircraft P81 were among those continuing the search when reports last came in on Tuesday.
