Tanker believed hijacked off Malaysia

ReCAAP has issued an alert to shipping concerning the Orkim Harmony, sister ship to the Orkim Victory which became the 10th vessel to be hijacked in Southeast Asia in 2015 when pirates took control of it on June 4th.According to the incident alert, the Orkim Harmony was carrying 6,000 mt of ULG 95 (petrol) and has a mixed crew of Indonesians, Malaysians and Myanmar nationals onboard. The shipping company reported that they had been receiving hourly position updates until June 11th at around 2054 LT.

Attempts to contact the ship were unsuccessful and her last known position placed her around 17nm SW of Pulau Aur, Malaysia, a favourite hunting ground for the local pirate gangs. The MMEA and Indonesian Navy have deployed units to investigate.

If the Orkim Harmony is confirmed as hijacked along with the timber carrier, KM Mutiara, then the total for the region rises to an alarming 12 ships taken in 2015.
