Enhancing Maritime Security

Chiemelie Ezeobi writes the recently held Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPV) conference, which had about 20 countries in attendance, provided a forum to tackle the challenges facing the maritime sector and proffer workable solutions.

On a certain Tuesday, participants including global experts in maritime security and naval operations, service chiefs and flag officers from international and African navies thronged Four Points By Sheraton Hotel in Lekki, Lagos. The reason was not far fetched. It was the second Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) Conference.

At the international maritime conference, security experts discussed areas and issues that are of interest to African and global maritime stakeholders. The conference had no fewer than 20 countries of the world in attendance and had an exhibition of security and defence related equipment for protection of oil and gas assets and co-operation and information sharing among maritime stakeholders.
