Court orders Nigerian Navy to pay N200m over illegal detention of vessel

A Federal excessive courtroom sitting in Lagos, southwest Nigeria, has ordered the Nigerian Navy and its chief of Naval Employees collectively and severally to pay an oil firm Mercury Oil Restricted the sum of N200 million damages for illegally detaining its vessel MT SAPPHIRE 1 and siphoning 280,000 litres of Automated Fuel Oil conveyed by the vessel.

In his judgement, the presiding decide, Chukwujekwu Aneke stated:”The current case introduced to the fore as soon as once more the boastful, brutal, callous and capricious method our regulation enforcement businesses generally undertake within the train of their features to the consternation and embarrassment of any discerning and respectable minds round. We’re in a democracy and should do every thing to enthrone and nurture democratic ethos for the great of the society.”
