The conference will follow on from the presidential elections taking place in May, and gather senior government officials, political decision makers and organisational heads not only from the Philippines but across Southeast Asia to discuss the current challenges and strategies to enhance maritime security and surveillance in the region.

In response to these growing regional threats, the Philippines government has increased its 2016 defence budget by 9.2 per cent for 2016, reaching a total of PHP126.62 billion (US$2.66 billion). As part of this increase, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) modernization program, has also risen from PHP15 to PHP25 billion pesos ($528.3 million). With this new spending power, 2016 is expected to be a significant year for defence related procurement in the Philippines!

Maritime Security & Coastal Surveillance Philippines will focus on the key issues and themes including:

  • Operational and technological challenges and solutionsto overcome persistent transnational threats such as illegal fishing, piracy, armed robbery, drug and human smuggling, illegal trespassing and border security.
  • Strategies and systems for enhanced inter-agency cooperation and law enforcement against maritime threats: Updates from Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, and Malaysia on interoperability between agencies for fast coordinated response to threats.
  • Focused streams on modification and procurement plans:How navies and coast guards in Asia and beyond are developing land, sea and aerial assets to combat the evolving nature of modern maritime threats and to enhance maritime domain awareness to safeguard the EEZ.
