EU ferry security measures lacking

Despite a marked increase in the threat posed by Daesh terrorists in Europe, as demonstrated by recent attacks in Paris and Brussels, ‘very few measures’ are being taken by EU member states to prevent passenger ferries and cruise ships being targeted.

Robert Missen, head of unit, land and maritime security at the European Commission, told the Security and Counter-Terror Expo (SCTX) in London on 20 April that current security rules, such as the IMO’s International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code, do not outline security measures for different vessel types.
