Piracy in the Indian Ocean: the number of incidents rising

Incidents at sea are on the rise. Between January 2017 and March this year, 78 cases were recorded, including nine for piracy and two for arms trafficking. This is revealed by a study conducted in the western Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden by the Contact Group on Piracy Off The Coast Of Somalia, at a conference on piracy in Balaclava, Monday 30 April.

Attorney General Maneesh Gobin spoke at the conference. He explained that the risk is real because piracy represents a danger for maritime safety. Although Mauritius is on the right track in its fight against piracy, Maneesh Gobin believes that the country must redouble its efforts.
