504 kg of Cocaine Seized From Container in Moín, Costa Rica; Originating From Columbia

August 13: The Ministry of Security of Costa Rica seized on Monday a shipment of half a ton of cocaine in a container from Colombia, whose final destination was Italy.

The finding occurred in the port of Moín, province of Limón (Caribbean), during a review of the container carried out by the Drug Control Police (PCD) after exchanging information with the Colombian National Navy.

“We have taken the issue of drug trafficking very seriously and that is how the PCD in coordination with the Colombian Navy has taken a blow to the criminal organizations that use our docks and routes to carry drugs,” said Security Minister Michael Soto .

The official explained that the container had as its final destination Italy and that it arrived in Costa Rican port in a ship from Colombia.

The container was carrying plastic boxes as licit goods, but in the review the authorities found 20 briefcases inside which had a total of 504 kilos of cocaine.

“This is a coordinated work and it is also a message to the criminal structures that we are attentive to prevent our territory from being used,” said Soto.

This is the second container with cocaine that Costa Rican authorities detect during the month of August in the port of Moín.

The first was discovered on August 4, came from Colon, Panama, with final destination Belgium, and inside there were seven briefcases with a total of 240 kilos of cocaine.

The authorities have not indicated whether both cases have any connection.

So far in 2019, Costa Rica registers about 28 tons of drugs (cocaine and marijuana) confiscated from drug trafficking groups.

In 2018, this Central American country reached a record by seizing a total of 33.6 tons of cocaine, while in 2017 the amount was 30 tons.

Costa Rica is considered by the anti-drug authorities as a place of passage of the drug, but also of storage, operations in which Costa Ricans usually participate in alliance with foreign groups.
