Brazilian State of Amazonas Receives R $3.5m in Equipment to Counter Piracy and Narcotics Trafficking

February 19: Local media reports that Amazonas State has received R $3.5m (approx. $785,000 USD) in security equipment to counter growing trends of piracy and narcotics trafficking in the region. The 140 pieces of equipment, delivered Wednesday in Manaus, includes armored speedboats, minibuses and vans for troop transport, and vehicles for the civil, military, and fire brigades.

In commenting about the equipment delivery, the vice president of the Legislative Assembly of Amazonas (ALEAM) reported that during her travels around the state she had received recurring complaints about the increase in piracy – against vessels and riverside communities – and narcotics trafficking.
