General Cargo Vessel Attacked And Likely Boarded 84NM South of Lagos, Nigeria

UPDATE March 10: According to further reports, the vessel was boarded while underway by six unauthorized persons with automatic weapons. The crew activated SSAS and mustered in the safety cabin. The unauthorized persons stole cash and then left. The glass on the bridge was broken, but no crew were injured. (ReCAAP)


March 05, 18:27 UTC: The general cargo vessel HUANGHAI GLORY (IMO #9458432) reportedly sent an alert by SSAS notifying of a piracy/armed attack in posn. 05 01.8N 003 27.6E (approx. 84NM south of Lagos, Nigeria). Unconfirmed initial reports state that an unspecified number of unauthorized persons boarded the vessel, and that the vessel was drifting with 23 CM on board.

According to an update by MDAT-GoG, all crew have since been reported safe. This incident will be updated as further information becomes available.

According to track, the ship started moving at around 1300 UTC Mar 6, after about an hour went adrift again. As of 1500 UTC Mar 6, the ship was still adrift or moving at slow speed, Nigerian Navy patrol boat NNS SPARROW approaching – in nearly 24 hours after alert, in vicinity of Lagos.  (FleetMon)
