Caribbean Basin Coastal Surveillance and Maritime Security Summit 2013.

Enhancing Security in the Caribbean Basin through Capacity Building and Regional Cooperation.

The global implications of Caribbean maritime insecurity have been noted and the region’s use as a drug route has been well known for some time. These risks, identified at the 2004 Americas Summit, are finally being addressed.

Hundreds of initiatives worth billions of dollars are currently being planned to meet these challenges. Primarily these initiatives are counter-narcotic; a problem that Lt. Gen. John F. Kelly (USMC) has stated costs the United States nearly $200 billion a year.

No surprise then that the U.S. is planning on spending considerably more than the $10 billion spent over the last decade in the coming years. Furthermore, the European Union is drawing up a new Joint EU-Caribbean Strategy 2013-2020, which is anticipated to increase funding to the region over the next seven years.

This conference brings together the island nations, local organisations, regional powers, diplomats and experts to discuss effective maritime security solutions in the region. With a senior speaker panel including representatives from the US Department of State, EU External Action Service, Organization of American States, as well as regional security institutions, coastguards and navies from around the Caribbean basin, this brand new event builds on our international reputation for excellence in maritime security conferences.
