Steersman allegedly killed by pirates off southern Vietnam

A steersman was killed and another injured after they were purportedly attacked by pirates while fishing in the Vietnamese waters bordering those of Thailand on Friday afternoon, a local army officer has affirmed.

Lieutenant Colonel Hoang Van Thanh, stationed at marine platform DK1/10 in the waters off the Mekong Delta province of Ca Mau, confirmed to Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Saturday that his facility received, and provided emergency treatment for, Nguyen Hung Cuong, who sustained severe bullet wounds around 11:00 pm on Friday night.

Cuong, 41, who resides in Kien Giang Province that neighbors Ca Mau, said emotionally he is lucky to get away with his life.
