Ship owners in the Netherlands are paying around $70,000 per vessel to the Dutch Defence Ministry for safeguarding efforts against pirates.

The “charges” had been set by the government, but ship owners have begun to voice displeasure at the cost and the level of protection they actually receive in Somali waters. According to them, defence efforts are so unsatisfactory they are looking to hire private security guards.
