Ransom payments to Somali pirates have risen 36-fold in the past five years, averaging $5.4 million per ship.

As a result, raids on tankers navigating the Strait of Hormuz are adding at least $2.4 billion to transport costs because vessels must divert onto longer routes in order to avoid the attacks off east Africa, the One Earth Future Foundation has reported.
