A New Zealander Naval officer has been appointed to head a multinational task force aimed at stopping pirates off the coast of Somalia.

Captain Jim Gilmour will take command of the Combined Task Force for three months from the end of June.

Captain Gilmour is the first Defence Force naval officer to command a major multinational task force in recent times.
