Japan to send SDF officer to take command of int’l antipiracy force

Japan plans to send around May next year a senior officer of its Self-Defense Forces to command a multinational force involved in antipiracy operations in the Gulf of Aden off the coast of Somalia, Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera said Friday.

The dispatch of the SDF officer to Combined Task Force 151, led by U.S. and British forces, was made possible by a set of guidelines approved by the government the same day. It will be the first time an SDF member has led a multinational force since the SDF was established in 1954.
