Rattled Rome calls its ambassador home for ‘urgent consultations’ on Marines murder row

The row between New Delhi and Rome over the Italian marine duo seemed to deepen on Wednesday, with Italy summoning its envoy to India, Daniele Mancini, for “urgent consultations”. 

Italian marines Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone are accused of killing two Keralite fishermen off the Indian coast in 2012. 

The report came a day after the Supreme Court rejected two separate pleas filed by the duo. 

While Latorre, in Italy since September on health grounds, had sought an extended stay at home, Girone wanted to go home for Christmas. 

Italian Foreign Minister Paolo Gentiloni was quoted by the local news agency ANSA as telling parliamentarians in Rome that there were “reservations” about sending back Latorre to India.
