Counterpiracy patrols: China out, Chile in

As China announced it would be suspending its anti-piracy patrols in the Gulf of Aden, the Chilean Ministry of National Defence revealed it will be sending a ship to take part in the EU’s counterpiracy operation.

China’s action is in response to the worsening security environment in Yemen.

According to IHS Jane’s Navy International, the South American country agreed to “integrate one of its navy’s ships in the European Operation ‘Atalanta'” after a meeting between the Spanish and Chilean defence ministers last week.
